R&D&i

Innovative spirit

The R&D&i department is the driving force behind Biosasun

We have a long history in projects related to the potential applications of the olive tree and its derivatives, as well as its therapeutic applications. Furthermore, we pay particular attention to the recovery and valuing of waste products.

We are currently involved in important research projects, funded by official national and international entities.

Our latest drive is to foster investment in the application of nanotechnology, as it allows us to find new solutions that could be converted into enhanced performance across the whole production sector, as well as in health, medicinal and agricultural sectors.

BIOFOOD

STRATEGIC RESEARCH PROJECT FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF NAVARRA: Use of biotechnology to obtain ingredients and foods beneficial to health (BIOFOOD).

The objective of this project is the study and research of microbiological bioprocesses that take place both inside the human body (originated by the intestinal microbiota), and outside, in the fermentation of food or in bioreactors, in order to generate ingredients (probiotics and postbiotics) and foods beneficial to health and with a demonstrated healthy effect. The development of BIOFOOD is a great opportunity to boost both the growth of the biosciences sector in Navarra and the development of the food industry in our community.

RECYWASTEOLHIVA PROJECT

The Recywasteolhiva Project aims to develop high added value products through recycling the waste generated during the olive oil production process.

As a result of this project, products obtained from the extraction of bioactive components present in olive leaves and waste from the production of olive oil have been launched into the market. These are:

  • Non-toxic anti-head lice products
  • Juices
  • Jams
  • Healthy pâtés

Participants:

  • Agua de Gracia Healthcare S.L., Spain
  • Biosasun S.A., Spain
  • Creative Concept Nordic AB, Sweden
  • Inesfly S.L, Spain
  • L´Urederra Centro Tecnológico, Spain

EUROEMPLEO PROJECT

The aim of the Euroempleo project is to generate employment based on the exploitation of olive grove by-products.

It consists in analysing the economic uses attributable to the different olive grove by-products (leaves, wood, pruning waste, two-phase pomace, etc.) with the aim of developing economic activities that generate employment in rural areas, linked to the use of local resources.

The execution of this project entailed the undertaking of the following activities:

  • Study visits and professional exchanges to get to know the employment solutions developed in other EU Member States and in Spanish regions
  • The undertaking of studies and comparative analyses regarding employment solutions and experiences developed in other EU Member States and in Spanish regions
  • Collaborative development of related innovative products, with priority themes on a European and interregional scale
  • Exchange of information, documentation, materials and experiences, promoting the transfer and adaptation of the methodologies used successfully in other areas to Andalusia
  • The organisation of sessions, conferences, seminars, meetings and other communication activities to share the results.

Participants:

  • Ayuntamiento de Puente de Génave
  • Energy Agency of Central Macedonia-Anatoliky S.A.
  • Biosasun S.A.
  • Instituto Vasco de Investigación y Desarrollo Agrario Neiker-Tecnalia
  • Asociación Española de Valorización Energética de la Biomasa

HEATDDELIVER PROJECT

The final aim of the project is to develop innovative nano-systems for the specific treatment of tumorous tissues of large perfusion (for example the kidneys, liver and lungs).

These nano-particles combine different lipids and ecological active substances of the olive tree, as well as magnetic particles that boost the action of different cancer drugs, also acting as a transport system for them. In short, they enable the treatment to be directed to specific areas, thus reducing the adverse effects of currently used therapies.

Biosasun offers its experience in the isolation of the main active substances obtained from oil produced olive waste, as well as their application in nanotechnology.

BINAFIE PROJECT

The aim of Binafie is to develop a new ecological bio-nanophytosanitary, that is long-lasting, with residual effectiveness and a wide spectrum, via the use of biotechnology and nanotechnology to protect the intensive farming of olive groves.

The target product combines three active ingredients, accepted in ecological agriculture, whose synergistic activity will allow for a wider pesticide spectrum and therefore an optimisation of the application of pesticide, both in terms of efficiency, the environment and the economy.

This project has emerged from the need for new phytosanitary products that are ecological, sustainable and compatible with environmental preservation and human health, whilst fulfilling the main objective of being effective in pest control and against olive tree diseases.

Biosasun offers its experience to the ecological sector, the production and use of nano-particles, as well as validations in the field of the resulting product.

Valorisation of agricultural by-products of the olive tree for their inclusion in the food and nutraceutical industry Project.

The main objective of this project is to improve the competitiveness of the agricultural by-products derived from olive tree and ‘lacha’ sheeps’ milk by improving all the processes involved in the agricultural and manufacturing chain through the implementation of quality schemes. As a result, several probiotic products enriched with polyphenols will be obtained thanks to the development and improvement of the new processes.
