Innovative spirit

The R&D&I area is the driving force of Biosasun

BIOSASUN innovates with organic olive tree polyphenols, We take full advantage of all the components of the olive grove - beyond the oil - to transform them into new ingredients, solutions and products with high added value. Our approach is based on the integral valorisation of the olive tree, where each element becomes an opportunity to generate functional products, new scientific knowledge and sustainable technologies.

Strategic lines of R&D&I

  1. Production of polyphenolic concentrates for functional products

Obtaining and concentrating polyphenols from olive leaves, pulp, stone and aqueous olive juice, with the aim of generating stable and sustainable concentrates that can be incorporated into food and cosmetics to improve their functionality and health properties.

  1. Research and characterisation of new polyphenols

Extending scientific knowledge on the great diversity of olive polyphenols. We study not only known compounds, but also new bioactive molecules with as yet undescribed functional potential.

  1. Study of the effects of polyphenols on health

Research into the mechanisms of action of polyphenols in different body systems, with a special focus on metabolic diseases (cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity), and emerging lines in skin health (burns, dermatitis, psoriasis, ulcers, atopic skin, etc.) and possible future applications in other conditions such as COPD.

  1. Climate change and technologies for the circular economy of olive groves

Analysis of the effects of climate change on organic olive growing and development of advanced agronomic solutions, including:

  • Agricultural technologies to improve the resilience and sustainability of the olive grove.
  • Biostimulants and sustainable alternatives to biopesticides for pest and disease control.
  • Agricultural rovers and electrical machinery for cultivation operations.
  • Digital cufflinks for the monitoring and prediction of agronomic processes, yields, pests, diseases and irrigation.
  • Sensorisation and intelligent control for the automation of olive groves.

  1. Sustainable, gourmet and functional product development

We design high-end food products (truffled products, probiotic drinks,...) and innovative products (cosmeceuticals, biostimulants,...) that directly integrate natural olive polyphenols from leaves, pulp, stone and aqueous juice. In this way, we achieve greater added value, a reinforced health profile and a 100 % sustainable % approach.

BINAFIE

The objective of Binafie is the development of a new ecological bio-nano-phytosanitary product, with high persistence, residual effectiveness and broad spectrum, through the use of biotechnology and nanotechnology, for the protection of intensive olive grove crops.

The target product combines three active ingredients, accepted in organic farming, whose synergistic activity will allow a wider pesticide spectrum and therefore an optimisation of the pesticide application, both from the point of view of efficacy, environmental and economical.

This project arose from the need for new phytosanitary products that are ecological, sustainable and compatible with the conservation of the environment and human health, fulfilling their fundamental objective of being effective in the control of olive tree pests and diseases.

Biosasun contributes its experience in the ecological sector, the production and use of nanoparticles, as well as the field validation of the resulting product.

BIOFOOD

STRATEGIC RESEARCH PROJECT FUNDED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF NAVARRA: Use of biotechnology to obtain ingredients and foods beneficial to health (BIOFOOD).

The aim of this project is to study and research the microbiological bioprocesses that take place both inside the human body (originated by the intestinal microbiota) and outside, in food fermentation or in bioreactors, in order to generate ingredients (probiotics and postbiotics) and foods that are beneficial to health and have a proven health effect. The development of BIOFOOD represents a great opportunity to boost the growth of the bioscience sector in Navarra and to promote the development of the food industry in our region.

TECHNOLOGICAL IMPROVEMENT OF OLIVE POLYPHENOL CONCENTRATION AND DRYING PROCESSES FOR GREATER ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The aim of the project is to improve processes in order to achieve more energy-efficient products with olive polyphenols.

This project is part of the line of aid for energy saving and efficiency in SMEs and large companies in the industrial sector, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), coordinated by the IDAE and managed by the Autonomous Regions, charged to the National Energy Efficiency Fund, with the aim of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable economy.

Biosasun has received a 30% grant co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) for the improvement of technology in industrial equipment and processes.

EUROEMPLOYMENT

The aim of the Euroempleo project is to generate employment through the use of olive by-products.

It consisted of analysing the economic uses attributable to different olive grove by-products (leaves, wood, pruning waste, olive pomace, etc.) in order to develop economic activities that generate employment in rural areas and are linked to the use of endogenous resources.

The implementation of this project involved the following activities:

Visits, studies and exchange of professionals to learn about the solutions developed, in terms of employment, in other EU Member States or Spanish regions.

Carrying out studies and comparative analyses on solutions and experiences developed in the field of employment in other EU Member States or Spanish regions.

Joint development of innovative products related to the priority themes at both European and interregional level.

Exchange of information, documentation, materials and experiences, promoting the transfer and adaptation of methodologies used successfully in other territories to the Andalusian reality.

Organisation of workshops, conferences, seminars, meetings or other communication actions to disseminate the results.

HEATDELIVER

The ultimate goal of the project is the development of innovative nanosystems for the targeted treatment of highly perfused tumour tissues (e.g. kidney, liver and lung).

These nanoparticles combine different lipids and organic active ingredients from the olive tree, as well as magnetic particles that enhance the action of different cancer drugs, while also serving as a carrier for them.

In short, they allow treatment to be targeted to specific areas, thus reducing the adverse effects caused by current therapies.

Biosasun brings its experience in the isolation of active ingredients obtained from olive waste oil itself, as well as its application in nanotechnology.

IGUZKITZA: GENOMIC RESEARCH USING ZIRKULAR INPUTS, ZENIT-NANO AND AGRONOMIC TECHNOLOGIES

The project is based on the cultivation of olive trees as the epicentre for the synergic and circular integration of different companies related to the olive grove itself, agri-food, canning, paper production and wastewater treatment. The main objective is to develop a more ecological and affordable production of main products and derivatives of the olive tree and other neighbouring crops, as well as to promote circular services in each of the sectors involved, seeking pioneering synergies of different strategic industries, in the interests of circularity. In addition to promoting circularity in products, this project aims to transform the business mentality towards a more sustainable and collaborative approach in the region of Navarra.
